Here at De Rosa Music, we have an extensive school that teaches just shy of 500 pupils every week. One of our more recently established instruments for teaching has been the violin, therefore I felt it was appropriate to write a mini what-to-buy guide, especially regarding student violins.
Firstly, you’ll need to establish what size of violin it is you need. This is simple enough, all you need to do is come to us (or your local music shop) where we can measure you up and see what violin fits. There are lots of sizes – 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 4/4. Most commonly we will sell from 1/4 upwards. It’s very rare we see a student who requires a smaller violin. This, of course, depends on the height and arm span of the player.
Since well before we started teaching Violin we have sold the Stentor brand. Stentor is widely recommended by teachers for their students and it’s a recommendation that we stand by. More specifically you have the Stentor 1 and 2 series. They are available at an affordable price of £149.00 for the 1 series and £179.00 for the 2 series. It may seem expensive, but for what you get it’s nothing short of a bargain!
They both come as an “Outfit”. This means that you get a carry case, the bow and rosin included in the price. The main difference is that with the 2 series you get ebony tuning pegs, an ebony chin rest (both rosewood on Series 1), a slightly better case and higher quality strings.
The advantage of having ebony components is not only the resale value, but it’s also the added tuning stability and durability of having harder wearing timbers.
We also rent these instruments at £10 per month. Click here for more information regarding renting. We also sell them second hand (stocks may vary). If you currently have a violin that is too small and wish to get rid of it, we may consider a part exchange.
