Should I use Wood tip Drum Sticks or Nylon Tip Drum Sticks

We are often asked whats the difference between a wood tip and nylon tip drum stick and what should I use to learn to play the drums. Experienced drummers will have their personal preference which will be to do with tone, speed and style of music. Here are some points to consider for the Beginner Drummer.

Wood Tip Drum Sticks:

  1. Sound:

    • Generally warmer and softer tone on cymbals.
    • A more organic, natural sound of wood on drums and cymbals.
  2. Feel:

    • Wood tips provide a more traditional and familiar feel.
    • The surface can wear down over time, but like all ageing instruments players like the way this affects the sound and feel.
  3. Playing Style:

    • Suited for a wide range of playing styles, including jazz, rock, and pop.

Nylon Tip Drum Sticks:

  1. Durability:

    • The nylon tip is more durable and tends to last longer than wood tips.
    • Less prone to chipping or breaking.
  2. Sound:

    • Produces a brighter and more defined sound on cymbals.
    • May cut through the mix better in louder environments.
  3. Consistency:

    • The tip shape remains more consistent over time, providing a stable and predictable feel.
  4. Playing Style:

    • Popular among drummers playing styles that require precision and clarity, such as in rock and metal.

We would recommend a beginner drummer to try both types to see which one you prefer. You may even find a combination of both depending on the musical styles you are playing.

If you are practising drums on an Electronic Kit we would recommend a Nylon tip. The Nylon tip is unlikely to snag a mesh head or damage a rubber pad.
